A Grand Bengali Mahabhoj that celebrates The Calcutta Connection

It is that time of the year again when the city of joy, Calcutta – now known as Kolkata completely transforms itself from the busy, cosmopolitan city to a land of old age traditions and shades which are close to every Calcuttan’s soul. A different energy fills the air with the realization of ‘Pujo asche!’ (The Pujas are here). The chilliness in the air, Durga idols on the roadside, fresh flowers adorning the streets, pandal structures – these are the signs which shows that the people of Bengal are getting ready to welcome Maa Durga.

To aid in the festivities and soothe the strong pinch of nostalgia, DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Bangalore is back again, with something that instantly connects you to Calcutta (not Kolkata). They are recreating the splendor of classic Bengali affair with Calcutta Connection 2.0 at Asia Alive, until 19th day of October.

A grand Mahabhoj will be prepared lovingly by Maharaj Pradip Debnath along with two more cooks who have been flown specially from Calcutta to ensure an unparalleled taste of Bengali cuisine, reminiscent of the foodie city, right here in Bangalore starting from Shashti until Dashami.

Ruban Das, General Manager at DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Bangalore while talking about the promotion said, “Bengali cuisine is not only about fish, rice or misti doi, it’s more about flavours than spices. Carrying forward the tradition from last year, our purpose is to get back to nostalgia by giving a wholesome experience of food and culture to all those who couldn’t make it to home, back in Kolkata during this time. Besides authentic Bengali food, we have adorned the restaurant with Live Chaat counters, Kolkata Rolls as well as used old traditional décor ornaments.”

Preview of The Calcutta Connection

As part of the preview, DoubleTree picked the best of menus from all the four days and created an exceptional showcase of delicacies from Calcutta. I have said this time and again, will say it once more - The taste of every single dish presented is the closest Bengali food I have ever had. The authenticity that this festival accompanies is sure to put all the mainstream Bengali restaurants in the city to shame. The food is so good, it takes to right in the streets of Calcutta.

The menu has been crafted to create a wonderful sojourn of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The extravagant spread includes traditional and savory items like Chingri Malai Curry, a traditional Bengali curry made from prawns and coconut milk and flavoured with spices; Bhetki Paturi, Bengali style barramundi fish and Pabda Macher Shorshe, a signature Bengali style fish in mustard-based curry.

You just cannot miss out on Jhal Muri, a delicious evening snack and very popular street food in Kolkata, puchka filled with a mixture of flavored water, tamarind chutney, chaat masala and chickpeas. Katla Macher Kalia, the most famous Bengali fish, Kosha Mangsho, the spicy Bengali mutton curry, Aloo Posto, potato cooked in poppy seed paste has to be accompanied by Ghee Bhat and Luchi, the Bengali styled poori. Adding to the extravagance will be soul-satisfying desserts like Bhappa DoiRosssogollaFlambed Gulab Jamun & many more.
